International DJ sensation Martin Garrix has been forced to cancel his upcoming performance in Mexico after undergoing emergency surgery for appendicitis, leaving the artist "heartbroken" but focused on recovery.
Unexpected Hospital Stay Forces Show Cancellation
The 29-year-old Dutch DJ, real name Martijn Gerard Garritsen, shared the disappointing news with fans via Instagram, posting a photograph of himself wearing a hospital gown while giving peace signs to the camera. Martin Garrix revealed he had developed an "unexpected case of appendicitis" requiring immediate surgical intervention.
In his social media statement addressed to Mexican fans, the Animals hitmaker expressed his devastation at having to pull out of Festival International Del Globo, scheduled for Saturday, November 15. "I'm truly heartbroken to share that due to an unexpected case of appendicitis and the surgery that followed, I'm unable to perform," Garrix wrote.
Medical Advice Prioritises Recovery
Appendicitis causes painful swelling and inflammation of the appendix, and requires prompt surgical treatment since a ruptured appendix can become life-threatening. Medical professionals typically recommend removing the appendix immediately to prevent serious complications.
Garrix emphasised that the decision to cancel wasn't made lightly, explaining that both his medical team and management had "strongly advised me to rest and recover to avoid any post-surgery complications." The DJ added a poignant reflection, noting this health scare served as "a good reminder for me that I'm human too, and my body needs some extra time to properly heal."
Rising Star's Career Momentum
The cancellation comes at a particularly busy time for the electronic music star. Just two weeks prior to his hospitalisation, Garrix had performed at Colorado's legendary Red Rocks venue, where U2 frontman Bono made a surprise appearance to watch the show.
Garrix was set to headline the 'Dream Nite' event at Festival International Del Globo alongside fellow electronic music stars Dimitri Vegas and Afrojack. The Dutch DJ first rose to prominence after being discovered by Tiësto early in his career, with his 2013 breakout hit Animals propelling him to international fame.
Subsequent tracks including Scared To Be Lonely and In The Name of Love continued his chart success, while collaborations with major artists like David Guetta, Bebe Rexha, Troye Sivan, Dua Lipa and Usher have cemented his status in the music industry. Garrix achieved the remarkable feat of being ranked number one DJ in the world by DJ Mag for three consecutive years from 2016 to 2018.
Despite the setback, the musician remained optimistic in his message to fans, promising: "Sending lots of love - I'll be back soon, I promise." His heartfelt post concluded with gratitude for the "understanding, love and support" from his global fanbase.
