Halo: Campaign Evolved PS5 Review – The Multiformat Remake You Never Expected
Halo: Campaign Evolved PS5 Review – The Multiformat Remake

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a full remake of the 2001 classic, now available on PlayStation 5 for the first time. The game features updated graphics, new gameplay elements from sequels, and three bonus missions that form a mini-campaign. However, technical issues like slowdown and inconsistent visuals mar the experience.

What Has Changed?

The remake adds features from later Halo games, such as the ability to use Covenant energy swords, hijack tanks, and sprint. New Skull collectibles offer buffs and cosmetic options. Collecting any three Skulls unlocks the Campaign Remix option, which randomizes enemy and weapon positions. Some level design has been altered, like removing trees and rocks for easier Warthog navigation. The infamous Library section now has more variety in enemy types across floors.

Bonus Missions Steal the Show

The three bonus missions, described as a three-hour mini-campaign with its own cut scenes and prequel storyline, are the highlight. They feel modern, with better graphics and level design, and include new weapons and aliens like Brutes. These missions suggest a potential direction for future Halo games, though they don't introduce anything groundbreaking.

Technical Issues

Despite the graphical upgrade, the remake suffers from significant slowdown in open-ended sections with multiple vehicles, reducing frame rates to slideshow levels. The visuals are inconsistent: landscapes and vegetation look great, but human soldier faces resemble PlayStation 2 quality. Longer cut scenes are added, but voice-acting and dialogue remain mediocre.

Multiplayer and Co-op

The remake lacks the original's split-screen competitive modes and LAN support. Instead, it offers four-player online and two-player split-screen co-op for both the main campaign and bonus missions, which is a welcome addition that elevates the experience.

Is It Still Relevant?

The original Halo: Combat Evolved was groundbreaking for its recharging shields, two-weapon limit, sandbox gameplay, and AI. While these innovations are now standard, the game still feels unique in its vehicle combat and open-ended levels. According to reviewer David Jenkins, “the gunplay feels far less unique than it did 25 years ago,” but the campaign remains enjoyable, especially with co-op.

Score and Verdict

Halo: Campaign Evolved scores 7/10. It is a well-meaning remake that honors the original but is overshadowed by its bonus missions and technical flaws. The future of Halo remains uncertain, with no new sequels in full production and Microsoft's mixed signals on multiformat releases.
