Coronation Street star's flirting idea could have made Dee-Dee gay

Former Coronation Street star Channique Sterling-Brown has revealed an unexpected storyline idea that could have changed everything for her character Dee-Dee Bailey. The 29-year-old actress played the role from 2022 to 2025, and recently shared on the Tis Yourself podcast that she deliberately flirted with DS Swain to throw fans off the scent of the character's potential romance with Carla Connor.

Flirting to mislead viewers

Sterling-Brown explained her motivation: 'I had this massive thing where I would always flirt with DS Swain because obviously I knew she would be getting with Carla. I just wanted to throw the fans off. So I was like, I'm going to flirt with DS Swain. I don't know, I was like, that just makes it interesting.'

She added: 'You never know what the Corrie writers are gonna do, right, if they see something they like, so I was like, imagine they really like it and they made Dee-Dee gay. I was like, where's the thing that me as an actor can play with in this?'

Dee-Dee's journey on the cobbles

Dee-Dee arrived in Weatherfield after three years in Los Angeles, seeking to be closer to her family. She became a beloved community member, holding the Bailey family together during Aggie Bailey's prolonged absence and supporting father Ed Bailey with his gambling addiction. Throughout 2023 and 2024, Dee-Dee was involved in a major storyline with solicitor Joel Deering, who was secretly grooming and sexually exploiting Lauren Bolton. Joel died in 2024 when Lauren attacked him.

Departure and reflection

After announcing her departure via Instagram, Sterling-Brown wrote: 'After three whirlwind years of Dee-Dee Bailey, I've decided to say farewell to the cobbles. Bittersweet to be saying goodbye, but I am so excited for pastures new and enjoying the end of playing Princess Diana and her many expressions.' The character left for Singapore towards the end of 2025.

The actress's playful idea ultimately did not materialize, but it highlights the creative input actors can bring to their roles.
