Black Midi Guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin Dies at 26

The music world is in mourning following the tragic death of Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, guitarist for the celebrated British experimental rock band Black Midi. He was 26 years old.

A Talented Musician Lost

A statement released by his family confirmed the devastating news, revealing he passed away "after a long battle with his mental health." They described him as "a talented musician and a kind, loving man" who had finally succumbed despite all efforts. The family's poignant message concluded with a plea: "Please take a moment to check in with your loved ones so we can stop this happening to our young men."

His record label, Rough Trade, shared the statement on social media, paying tribute to Kwasniewski-Kelvin as "an incredibly talented person who will be truly missed."

Architect of a Pioneering Sound

Kwasniewski-Kelvin was a foundational member of Black Midi, a group that rapidly became one of the most discussed and musically daring rock acts of recent years. The band formed after its members met at the prestigious Brit School in London.

While initially drawn to pop-punk and classic rock, Kwasniewski-Kelvin's musical horizons expanded dramatically after meeting frontman Geordie Greep, developing a fascination with noise and experimental rock. These diverse influences fused to create the band's energetic and progressive signature sound.

This sound was captured on their explosive 2019 debut album, "Schlagenheim," which propelled them to critical acclaim. The album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize that same year and received the coveted "Best New Music" rating from Pitchfork, which praised it as "magnetic and dazzling." The record earned the band a passionate and dedicated fanbase.

A Step Back for Health and a Lasting Legacy

In 2021, Kwasniewski-Kelvin made the difficult decision to leave Black Midi, citing his ongoing mental health struggles. At the time, the band expressed full support for their friend, stating they were "fully behind our best mate in his recovery."

The group continued as a trio, releasing two further studio albums before announcing their split in 2024. Kwasniewski-Kelvin's contribution to their early, groundbreaking work remains an indelible part of their legacy and of the UK's modern rock landscape.
