Birds Eye has officially updated its Classic Fish Finger Sandwich recipe to reflect the nation's preferred serving method, ending a 70-year debate over how to slice the sandwich. According to new research commissioned by the company, two-thirds of fish finger fans believe the correct way is to cut vertically down the middle, through the fish fingers, rather than leaving them intact.
The Nation's Verdict on Slicing
The study, which surveyed fish finger enthusiasts, found that only 15 per cent prefer a diagonal slice through the sandwich, while a third of people have had a disagreement over the correct cutting method. The debate has persisted since Birds Eye first invented the Fish Finger 70 years ago, prompting the company to seek public opinion.
Mark Schomberg, Head of Culinary at Birds Eye, said: “As the inventors of the Fish Finger, we’ve seen plenty of passionate opinions over the years about the best way to enjoy a Fish Finger sandwich. When a customer reached out to see whether there was an official answer, we realised it was time to put it to the nation.”
Why Cutting Through the Fish Fingers Wins
Schomberg explained the practical benefits of the preferred method: “While the difference may appear modest, cutting the fish fingers in half helps release the steam and fresh goodness inside, dispersing the temperature, flavour and aroma throughout the sandwich. It also provides an even balance of crispy coating, succulent fish, and soft bread, providing a delicious mouthful with every bite.”
He added: “Fans told us it delivers a better bite and even improves the eating experience, so we simply had to update our Classic Fish Finger Sandwich recipe to provide some long-asked-for clarity. After more than 70 years, the nation has finally had its say. Of course, how you enjoy your fish finger sandwich is always down to personal preference. We think they taste great every way.”
Impact on the Classic Recipe
The updated recipe now reflects the majority preference, with Birds Eye acknowledging the passionate opinions Brits hold about their sandwiches. The company's research highlights that the nation remains divided on the best way to slice, but the new guidance offers a definitive answer for those seeking it. The change is expected to influence how home cooks prepare the classic dish, aligning with the two-thirds majority who favour cutting through the fish fingers.
