Fresh from the global phenomenon that was Squid Game, its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is diving straight into his next major project for Netflix. The streaming giant has confirmed that production is now underway in South Korea on The Dealer, a high-stakes casino crime drama with a supernatural twist.
From Wedding Bells to High-Stakes Tables
The series will follow Geonhwa, a talented casino dealer whose life is upended when a housing scam destroys her wedding plans. Forced back into the gambling underworld she thought she had left behind, Geonhwa discovers she has a unique advantage: long-hidden supernatural powers that give her an edge at the tables. Her mission is to use these abilities to win back the money she needs to finally walk down the aisle.
A Stellar Cast and Creative Team
Jung So-min, known for Alchemy of Souls and Love Reset, takes the lead role of Geonhwa. Netflix has described this as a radical departure from her previous work, portraying a woman who has spent years concealing her extraordinary gifts.
She is joined by a formidable supporting cast. Ryoo Seung-bum will play Hwang Chisu, a desperate gambling addict who becomes entangled in Geonhwa's scheme. Lee Soo-hyuk stars as the intimidating and unreadable casino player Jo Jun. Completing the core quartet is Ryu Kyung-soo as Choi Wooseung, Geonhwa's fiancé and a police detective.
The series is produced by Hwang's own Firstman Studio, the company behind Squid Game, with Hwang himself on board as producer.
Fan Excitement and High Expectations
News of the project has already generated significant buzz online. Fans on social media platform X have hailed the announcement as "superb" and an "epic" project already. On Reddit, some have humorously referenced the immense personal toll creating Squid Game took on Hwang, with one user hoping he "loses fewer teeth this time."
With its blend of crime, high-stakes gambling, and supernatural elements from one of Netflix's most successful creators, The Dealer is poised to become the next major obsession for fans of innovative Korean drama. The series is currently in production, with a release date on Netflix to be announced.
