Cherki clashes with Deschamps in France's World Cup defeat

Rayan Cherki clashed with France head coach Didier Deschamps on the touchline during the World Cup third-place match against England on Saturday, which ended in a 6-4 defeat for Les Bleus. The incident occurred during a hydration break in the first half, after Cherki had been substituted at halftime due to a subpar performance.

Match Overview

England surged to a 4-0 lead by halftime in Miami, capitalizing on a disastrous opening 45 minutes from France. Deschamps' side mounted a second-half comeback, scoring three unanswered goals to narrow the gap. Bukayo Saka then converted a penalty to complete his hat-trick, making it 5-3. Ousmane Dembele struck in injury time to give France hope, but Jude Bellingham sealed England's 6-4 victory with a brilliant solo goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

Cherki-Deschamps Confrontation

Cherki, making his first World Cup start, was replaced by Dembele at halftime after a poor display. During the first-half hydration break, Deschamps was seen giving instructions to the Manchester City midfielder, but Cherki responded by waving his hand and turning his back on the coach before walking away. When asked about the incident after the match, Deschamps said: 'I'm not going to settle scores today. The players know perfectly well. I'm not going to point fingers. However, I always tell them, and as Kylian said, they needed time to process it but it was my mistake, I should have made different choices from the start of the match, you can say that, and perhaps things would have gone better. Everyone is judged on their performance. Obviously, some players could have done better. I wish them all the best.'

Previous Tensions

This was not the first disagreement between Cherki and Deschamps at the World Cup. Earlier in the tournament, Cherki appeared to ignore the 57-year-old coach after coming on as a late substitute in France's win over Sweden in the last-32 round.

Rabiot Criticizes Teammates

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot also voiced frustration with his teammates' attitude during the first half against England. 'We started the first half in a shameful way,' Rabiot said. 'I saw behaviour from some players that I'd never seen before. It's disappointing, it was the last match to put on a good show. There's a lot of disappointment [after the defeat to Spain], but there was work to be done, we can't just be content with sloppy play. In the first half, the behaviour was quite unacceptable.'
