Beloved Home and Away actress Lynne McGranger has stunned her legion of fans by unveiling a brand-new look for 2026, trading her signature fiery red locks for a gorgeous shade of grey.
A Fond Farewell to Fiery Locks
The soap legend, who portrayed the iconic Irene Roberts in Summer Bay for over thirty-two years, shared the transformation on social media with a heartwarming New Year's message. 'Wishing all my lovely friends a wonderful 2026!' she wrote, reflecting on a year filled with 'pinch-me moments', joy, and love.
McGranger expressed her enduring gratitude, vowing to never take a moment for granted. She wished her followers 'peace and joy and wisdom and love and just a smidge of excitement and adventure' for the year ahead.
From Villain to Matriarch: Irene's Legacy
Lynne McGranger first joined the iconic Australian soap in the early 1990s, introducing Irene as a complex and troubled character. Initially a violent and abusive alcoholic with a fractured relationship with her children, the role evolved dramatically.
After hitting rock bottom, Irene Roberts turned her life around, got sober, and dedicated herself to becoming a foster parent. Over three decades, she navigated major storylines including dating a murderer, battling breast cancer, and relapsing into alcoholism, ultimately becoming the straight-talking, big-hearted matriarch fans adored.
Her final storyline saw Irene receive a life-changing Alzheimer's diagnosis, leading her to leave Summer Bay to travel the world in a bitter-sweet departure.
Branching Out After Bay Life
In a 2025 interview, McGranger reflected on her decision to leave the show after such a monumental run. 'It's kind of been in my head for a few years,' she explained, noting she wanted to explore new creative avenues while she still had her health and fitness.
She expressed a desire to return to theatre, try radio, and even attempt some stand-up comedy. 'You either leave voluntarily or leave in a box by the time you're my age,' she quipped humorously about her exit strategy.
Her tenure on Home and Away provided unique opportunities, including working with future Hollywood superstars like Margot Robbie and Chris Hemsworth. She also shared scenes with other notable alumni including Samara Weaving, Tammin Sursok, Ryan Kwanten, and Isla Fisher.
Fans were quick to flood her social media with compliments on her new style. 'Love the hair – wow – you look stunning (as always) xx,' wrote one admirer, while another simply stated, 'You look gorgeous.' The overwhelming response highlights the enduring affection held for both the actress and the character she brought to life for a generation.
