Original God Of War Director Slams New Spin-Off As 'Offensive' And 'Insulting'

David Jaffe, the original director of the iconic God Of War series, has unleashed a scathing critique of the new spin-off game, Sons Of Sparta, describing it as 'offensive' and 'insulting' to fans. In a series of video reviews, Jaffe expressed his deep disappointment with the game, which shadow-dropped last week alongside the announcement of full remakes for the original trilogy.

Jaffe's Harsh Criticism Of Sons Of Sparta

Jaffe, who served as game director and lead designer on the first God Of War in 2005 and is often credited as the series creator, did not hold back in his assessment. After playing for about an hour, he called the game 'total crap' and questioned the developers' decisions, stating, 'What the f*** are they thinking? Its existence is offensive.' He compared Sons Of Sparta unfavorably to other Metroidvania titles like Blasphemous and Ninja Gaiden Ragebound, which he believes are far superior.

Much of Jaffe's frustration stems from the story and writing. Sons Of Sparta is a prequel featuring a younger Kratos during his Spartan training days, a portrayal Jaffe dismisses as 'some generic kid' that 'makes no f***ing sense.' He has long been critical of the modern interpretation of Kratos as a repentant father, preferring the amoral edgelord from the Greek era games. 'It really makes me angry. The fact they would think this is what people want from God Of War. It's insulting to the fans, to the people that worked on the games,' Jaffe emphasized.

Gameplay Issues And Fan Reactions

In a second, longer video, Jaffe offered a more measured critique of the gameplay, highlighting problems with visual design that make it difficult to distinguish foreground from background, complicating traversal. He also expressed a general disdain for playing as child characters, demanding no more such games.

Fan reactions to Sons Of Sparta have been mixed. On Metacritic, the game holds a mostly positive player review score of 7.2. Some commenters see Jaffe's dislike as a badge of honor, with one stating, 'If Jaffe hates it you know it's good,' and another agreeing it's 'the best confirmation that the game is good.' Others, like apabub, enjoy the experience, saying, 'It really picks up. I'm loving it. More smaller, cheaper experiences like this please.'

However, Jaffe has supporters too. On the LivestreamsFail subreddit, users echoed his criticisms, with quaker_otis noting, 'He's right, the visual design sucks and you can't tell what's foreground and background,' and RE4PER_ admitting the game 'looks very disappointing visually and mechanically.'

Future Of God Of War And Santa Monica Studio

While Jaffe will likely have more to say when the God Of War remakes release in the future, Santa Monica Studio may announce another project later this year. Reliable rumors suggest a new title could arrive by 2028, though it won't be the sci-fi game previously theorized. As the gaming community debates Sons Of Sparta, Jaffe's outspoken views continue to stir controversy and discussion among fans and critics alike.
