Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) has finally given in to temptation and cheated on husband Peter Beale (Thomas Law) with Mark Fowler Jr (Stephen Aaron-Sipple) in EastEnders, as heavily hinted in the New Year's Day flashforward episode. Mark, who has long had his sights set on Lauren, initially approached her with a business proposition to funnel stolen cars through her car-selling empire. Despite her initial reluctance, the lure of quick cash to support her family led Lauren to form a criminal partnership with Mark.
Sexual tension and a test of loyalty
The main issue, beyond the risk of jail time, has been the undeniable sexual tension between them. Last week, Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) discovered their scheme and planted doubt in Mark's mind about Lauren's loyalty, questioning his feelings for her. Although Mark denied any romantic interest, he set up a test to see if Lauren would come to his aid. When Lauren realised she was being tested, she reacted with fury, calling him a 'git' and storming off.
Police attention and a passionate encounter
Next week, Mark's carelessness attracts police attention while selling a stolen car. Lauren rushes to help, and the passion between them ignites, causing her to flee. Later, Mark invites her to the boxing gym to 'talk', and despite her conflict, she agrees to meet him. The exact outcome is kept under wraps.
Ian Beale grows suspicious
Later in the week, Lauren showers Peter with affection, catching the attention of Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt). During a family outing to Harry's Barn to celebrate what could be Ian's last night in Walford before his court case for hitting Jordan Fox (Jahsaiah Williams), a clash with Jordan's mother Chelsea (Zaraah Abrahams) ensues. When Ian retreats, followed by Lauren, he confronts her about her recent secretive behaviour, asking what she has been hiding.
