The highly anticipated first trailer for the third season of HBO's hit drama Euphoria has finally been released, setting the stage for a darker, more mature chapter in the lives of its iconic characters.
A Troubled Life After High School
Picking up a full five years after the events of season two, the new footage teases a world of continued chaos. Zendaya's Rue appears deeply entangled with dangerous drug dealers, a storyline that sees the return of Martha Kelly. Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney's Cassie is shown to be a cam girl, surprisingly married to Jacob Elordi's Nate. Hunter Schafer's Jules is navigating life as a sugar baby.
The official season logline hints at profound themes, stating the characters will "wrestle with the virtue of faith, the possibility of redemption, and the problem of evil." Creator Sam Levinson confirmed the deliberate time jump, stating a return to high school was off the table. "Five years felt like a natural place [to jump] because if they had gone to college they'd be out of college at that time," he explained.
An All-Star Cast Returns and Expands
The core cast, including Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow, and Chloe Cherry, are all back for this long-awaited season, which has been four years in the making. They are joined by two-time Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, who has promised a groundbreaking run of episodes. "We're gonna have a devastatingly gorgeous, epic season that I think is breaking the mold of television," Domingo told Deadline. "I think it's gonna become more cinema than television."
The new season boasts an impressive roster of newcomers:
- Academy Award winner Sharon Stone
- Singer Rosalía
- Actress Natasha Lyonne
- Danielle Deadwyler and NFL star Marshawn Lynch
Adding further cinematic heft, Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer will provide the score.
Coming After The Idol and New Career Highs
Season three arrives following Levinson's controversial second HBO series, The Idol, which was panned by critics. The show's stars, however, are riding waves of success. Zendaya, fresh from 2024's Challengers, has major films like Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey lined up. Sydney Sweeney leads the hit thriller The Housemaid, and Jacob Elordi is on the Oscar trail for his role in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein after a Critics Choice win.
Sweeney has hinted that the new season is "crazier" than ever, while Levinson himself has boldly called it "our best season yet." Fans won't have to wait much longer to judge for themselves, as Euphoria season three is set to premiere on 12 April.
