Dane died on Thursday afternoon, as confirmed by his representatives in an official statement. The actor had first revealed his ALS diagnosis in April, bringing attention to the progressive and terminal nature of the disorder.
The statement read: "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, actor Rebecca Gayheart, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he's received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time."
Notable Career and Recent Work
Dane gained widespread fame for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately nicknamed "McSteamy," on the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy. Initially signed for just one episode, his character became a series regular for six seasons, endearing him to audiences worldwide.
More recently, he portrayed Cal Jacobs, the father of Jacob Elordi's character, in the HBO drama Euphoria. Despite his declining health, Dane continued to work, filming his scenes for the upcoming third season of Euphoria in a wheelchair. In April, he told People magazine, "I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. It progressively robs individuals of their ability to move limbs, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe independently. In North America, ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, named after the New York Yankees baseball player diagnosed in 1939. Other notable figures who have battled motor neurone disease include actor David Niven and singer Roberta Flack.
