Coronation Street fans breathed a collective sigh of relief this week as the manipulative Becky Swain, played by Amy Cudden, was finally sentenced to prison for her litany of crimes. However, a wave of suspicion is now sweeping through the fanbase, with many convinced this is not the last Weatherfield has seen of the unhinged villain.
The Twisted Web of Deceit Unravels
Becky first exploded back onto the cobbles in a major plot twist last summer, delivering the shock of a lifetime to her wife, Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers), and daughter Betsy (Sydney Martin). The family had spent nearly four years mourning Becky, believing she was killed in a hit-and-run while on police duty.
Her return came with a wild story about an undercover operation and a faked death, but the truth soon emerged. Becky was profoundly corrupt and dangerous, her homecoming timed perfectly to sabotage Lisa's new engagement to factory boss Carla Connor (Alison King). Through calculated manipulation, she drove a wedge between the couple, ultimately causing their breakup, and schemed her way back into the family home.
Her criminal past, however, was a ticking time bomb. To protect her secrets, she arranged a violent attack on DI Costello (Daon Broni). Unbeknownst to her, Carla and Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) were already hot on her trail.
Kidnap, Capture, and a Dramatic Confrontation
The plot reached a terrifying climax when Becky discovered Carla searching her flat for evidence. In a desperate move, she kidnapped the factory owner, imprisoning her in an airing cupboard for several weeks without vital anti-rejection medication. Simultaneously, she convinced Lisa and Betsy to flee with her to Spain, intending to leave Carla for dead.
A dramatic rescue mission ensued. Kit found Carla, and the pair gave chase. Carla's frantic phone call to Lisa finally exposed Becky's web of lies. Fate then intervened in the form of a catastrophic head-on collision en route to the ferry port, causing a major pile-up.
Once it was clear the Swains would survive, Lisa made the arrest herself, charging Becky with fraud and kidnapping. Behind bars, the villain threatened to paint Lisa as an accessory, but a blistering confrontation from a betrayed Betsy – who told her she wished she had really died – seemed to change everything. Becky subsequently pleaded guilty, without implicating Lisa, and was handed a 12-year sentence.
Fan Theories Point to a Vengeful Comeback
While the conclusion offered closure for many, numerous Metro readers are sceptical. Fan theories are now running rife across social media, predicting Becky's inevitable return.
