Catford Cinema Set for Summer Reopening as The Castle Catford

After nearly two years of closure, a beloved South London cinema is poised to reopen its doors this summer under new ownership. Catford Mews, the area's sole cinema, will be revitalized as The Castle Catford, following its acquisition by the independent cinema operators from Hackney. This move marks a significant revival for the community hub, which was shuttered in October 2024.

New Vision for a Community Landmark

The revamped venue will boast three screens alongside a dedicated community space, a bar, and a café. The new owners have announced a strong emphasis on programming independent and foreign language films, while also including mainstream titles to cater to diverse audiences. The previously popular foyer area, which opens onto Winslade Way, will also be reopened, featuring a café and food court space. Food start-ups will be invited to pitch for opportunities once the venue is operational.

Asher Charman, co-founder of The Castle Cinema, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We know how much this venue means to Catford, and we’re honoured to be part of its next chapter. Our goal is to bring The Castle’s independent heart to 32 Winslade Way, pairing a world-class film programme with a relaxed, welcoming bar and café."

Background of Closure and Council Strategy

The cinema was closed by Lewisham Council in October 2024 after its previous operator, Really Local Group (RLG), accumulated over £650,000 in unpaid rent since 2019. The council also alleged that the firm received a £50,000 grant for refurbishment work that was never completed. This closure left a void in the local cultural scene, prompting community concern.

Lewisham Council views the reopening as a key component of its strategy to boost footfall in Catford and support evening and weekend activities. Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres OBE, commented, "This is just brilliant news not only for Catford but for the wider borough. We shared the community’s view that keeping the cinema offer was incredibly important, and not only has this happened, but we’re going to see it completely transform into an even more vibrant community space."

Community-Focused Programming

The new owners aim to create more than just a cinema; they envision a dynamic social hub that reflects Catford's diversity. Planned initiatives include:

  • Parent & Baby screenings
  • LGBTQ+ events
  • Curated strands celebrating Black cinema
  • Programs highlighting local heritage

Charman added, "We’re building more than just a cinema; we’re creating a space for culture and connection, for everyone. We want our programme to reflect the true diversity and energy of Catford. We’re excited to build a vibrant social hub where the whole community feels at home."

Mayor Dacres extended a warm welcome to The Castle Cinema, emphasizing the careful selection process for the new operator to ensure it contributes to Catford Town Centre's success and inclusivity. The reopening is anticipated to reinvigorate the area, providing a much-needed cultural and social venue for residents.
