Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 Update Drops Early Before Switch 2 Launch
Animal Crossing New Horizons Update Released Early

Nintendo has delivered a welcome surprise to its vast community of island designers by releasing a major free update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons ahead of its planned schedule. The substantial 3.0 update is now available for download on the Nintendo Switch, introducing a host of new features including a Resort Hotel and quality-of-life improvements.

What's New in the Animal Crossing 3.0 Update?

The update, which was originally slated to launch on Thursday, January 15, 2026, went live early on January 14. While Nintendo has not yet provided official patch notes, the core additions are known from prior announcements and trailers. The headline feature is the Resort Hotel located on the pier, managed by the beloved character Kapp'n and his family. Players will be tasked with decorating guest rooms to meet specific thematic requests.

Other significant enhancements include a substantial increase to home storage capacity and the introduction of batch crafting, a long-requested feature that will save players considerable time. The update also brings Resetti's Reset Service, allowing for the bulk removal of flowers and furniture, new Nintendo-themed items, and the ability to create and customise three new Slumber islands via Luna's Dream World.

Switch 2 Edition Launches Tomorrow

This free update coincides with the imminent release of a dedicated Switch 2 edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, set for launch on January 15. Owners of the original Switch version can upgrade to this enhanced edition for £4.19. The new version boasts improved visuals, mouse controls, GameChat support, and 4K resolution capabilities.

The early rollout of the 3.0 update is believed to be an effort by Nintendo to synchronise its global launch. Reports of the update becoming available coincided with it turning 1am on January 15 in New Zealand, the time it was expected to go live in other territories worldwide.

What This Means for the Animal Crossing Series

The substantial new content and the release of a Switch 2 edition suggest that Nintendo intends to support New Horizons for the foreseeable future. With the game approaching its sixth anniversary, this move indicates that a brand-new mainline Animal Crossing title may still be some way off. The gaming community will now be looking towards the traditional February or March Nintendo Direct presentations for any hints about the series' future.

Players who are not prompted to download the 3.0 update automatically can manually trigger it by highlighting the game's icon on the Switch home menu, pressing the '+' button, and selecting 'Software Update' followed by 'Via the Internet'.
