More than one million homes and businesses across England and Wales can now determine their eligibility for government-funded internet upgrades through a newly launched online tool. Project Gigabit Accelerates Rural Connectivity
The Project Gigabit scheme, established in 2021, is designed to deliver gigabit-capable broadband to hard-to-reach rural areas, providing faster and more reliable internet connections. Government ministers report that the programme is now operating at its fastest pace, significantly expanding access to high-speed internet for households and companies that have historically struggled with inadequate online infrastructure.
Through a substantial agreement with Openreach, valued at up to £1.2 billion, engineers are implementing full fibre broadband upgrades in more than 100 rural towns and villages.
