Sir Devonshire Square: New Boutique Hotel Opens in City of London
Sir Devonshire Square Hotel Opens in City of London

The historic Devonshire Square precinct in the City of London has welcomed a significant new addition this autumn: Sir Devonshire Square, the inaugural UK hotel from the Amsterdam-based Sircle Collection.

A Fusion of Heritage and Contemporary Design

Located at the vibrant intersection of Shoreditch's creative scene and the City's financial core, the 81-room boutique hotel occupies a unique position. It is situated just two minutes from Liverpool Street station, Britain's busiest transport hub by footfall. The hotel's design, by the renowned Dimorestudio, carefully integrates within the area's exceptional architecture, which includes the only surviving 18th- and 19th-century warehouse buildings within the City of London's boundaries.

The development transforms a former East India Company warehouse, preserving the embodied carbon of the historic structure while creating a modern hospitality space. Sir Devonshire Square will soon enhance its offering with a rooftop bar, a restaurant led by acclaimed chef Eyal Shani, and The Cover, Sircle’s private members’ club. A rotating art programme will spotlight emerging London talent, supported by monthly cultural events.

Aligning with the Destination City Vision

The opening is highlighted as a perfect example of the City of London Corporation's Destination City growth strategy. This initiative aims to make the Square Mile a more open, sociable, and vibrant destination seven days a week by blending heritage, hospitality, and culture. Hotels are seen as central to this vision, providing accommodation, activating ground-floor spaces, and encouraging visitors to stay longer.

The project aligns with the City Plan 2040, which prioritises a zero-carbon future and a retrofit-first approach to development. In line with accessibility goals, at least 10 per cent of the hotel's rooms are required to meet wheelchair-accessible standards.

Meeting Demand and Setting a Precedent

The launch responds to clear demand, with London forecast to need 58,000 additional serviced bedrooms by 2041. Sir Devonshire Square is positioned to serve both leisure and business travellers, supporting meetings and cultural events. Tom Sleigh, Chair of the Planning and Transportation Committee, stated the hotel exemplifies how the Square Mile can evolve while protecting its historic fabric and distinctive spirit.

By bringing new life to one of the City's most characterful areas, Sir Devonshire Square stands as a model for future growth, demonstrating how heritage-led design, sustainability, and cultural vibrancy can successfully combine to create an inclusive and future-ready destination.
