A new study has officially declared which European city wears the crown for ultimate luxury, and it's a destination just a short flight from the UK. Research by the luxury travel concierge service PrivateUpgrades has analysed over 100 cities to find the continent's most affluent spot.
The Posh Scale Winner
Geneva, Switzerland, scored an impressive 98.3 out of 100 on the study's 'posh scale'. The analysis compared the density of high-end amenities per capita, including five-star hotels, Michelin Guide restaurants, and golf courses.
The city's credentials are formidable. It boasts the highest number of golf courses per capita, at 7.36. Furthermore, within every 100 square kilometres of the city area, you can find 57 Michelin Guide restaurants and 18 five-star hotels, giving it the highest concentration of such venues in Europe.
More Than Just Banks and Diplomats
Often known as a global hub for private banking and diplomacy, hosting headquarters for organisations like the Red Cross and the World Health Organisation, Geneva offers stunning natural beauty. Nestled on Switzerland's southern border with France, it is surrounded by the majestic Swiss Alps and sits on the shores of a breathtaking lake.
For visitors, the compact and walkable Old Town, with its maze of historic streets, is a must-see attraction. The city's excellent public transport system, often complemented by free travel cards from hotels, makes exploring easy without splashing out on taxis.
Experiencing Geneva's Luxury on a Budget
While Geneva's reputation for high costs is well-earned, there are savvy ways to enjoy it. The city's natural surroundings provide ample free exploration opportunities, from lakeside walks to mountain views.
For foodies wanting a taste of the acclaimed culinary scene without an exorbitant price tag, the modern bistro Natürlich is a recommended starting point. It offers sharing plates with unique ingredients, like roast cuttlefish, an impressive wine list, and a stunning riverside location on the River Rhône.
The research confirms that for those seeking the pinnacle of European luxury, from fine dining to pristine golf courses, Geneva is the undisputed destination. With smart planning, its charms can be accessible to more than just the super-rich.
