It has been just over a year since Ne-Yo hard-launched his polyamorous lifestyle on Instagram, and he is now claiming it is affecting his professional life. In May 2025, the So Sick singer, whose real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith, referred to his relationship as a ‘pyramid.’ He then individually introduced his four girlfriends to the world, each with unique nicknames: Cristina (Pretty Baby), Arielle (Twin Flame), Moneii (Phoenix Feather), and Brionna (Sexy Lil’ Somethin’).
Fast forward to May 2026, and Brionna appears to have left the setup, leaving Ne-Yo with a party of three. Despite this, the Grammy winner still looks loved up on social media. However, he recently said that his relationship has compromised his job opportunities. Speaking on a recent episode of Tish and Brandi Cyrus’ podcast, Sorry We’re Cyrus, Ne-Yo suggested that the ‘world is mad at the fact that [he’s] in a polyamorous relationship.’
The 46-year-old went so far as to say that people are ‘upset’ with him, and that ‘there are deals [he’s] missed out on’ because of his lifestyle choices. ‘They’re like, “I don’t know if we can get behind the whole polyamorous [thing].” It’s like, “Okay what?”’ he said. ‘It’s almost like you can be a great person and you can show respect and appreciation, but the second you do something that they don’t agree with — cancel. And that just doesn’t make any sense to me.’
Alongside questioning what his relationship has to do with his role as an entertainer, Ne-Yo also urged people to have an open mind. He said that once you ‘witness it,’ it is much easier to understand. ‘You have to witness it,’ he said. ‘Cause people say the dumbest stuff like, “It’s degrading.” Degrading to who? I’m not lying to nobody. Everybody is here by choice. Like who’s being degraded? Who’s being disrespected? What are you talking about?’ Ne-Yo added, ‘You can’t give the haters any more energy.’
This is not the first time Ne-Yo has suggested that people might have a problem with his relationship. The Closer singer regularly shares glimpses of his lifestyle on social media, alongside captions that allude to said ‘haters.’ This weekend, Ne-Yo dropped a carousel of relationship snaps with his 4.9 million followers. Among the photos, which included selfies, bikini shots, and a picture of the girls wearing the same pink outfit next to Ne-Yo, he penned: ‘Most can only dream of a love like this. Most can only imagine what it feels like to wake up smiling every morning, walking into whatever the day may bring loving life, knowing your team is strong and the love is real. To most it can only be a fantasy. BUT IT’S OUR REALITY.’
In the caption, Ne-Yo said that the foursome has officially been together for around three years now, and that they have had their ‘ups and downs, rainy days, and sunny days.’ Adding that the ‘good has outweighed the bad,’ and that they are all ‘works in progress,’ Ne-Yo clapped back at those who don’t approve. He said: ‘I will match your effort, I will lead with love and WE will continue to make life lovely for each other. Let em’ say what they want to. We happy over here. And we will continue to be so. I LOVE Y’ALL WITH MY EVERYTHING!!’
In contrast to his comments, it looks like Ne-Yo still has plenty of high-profile work to keep him occupied. From his Nights Like This tour with Akon to his ’20 years of Ne-Yo’ Rolling Stone cover in 2025, the jobs and money are still clearly rolling in.
