The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated travel guidance for British nationals planning holidays to Turkey, with a specific warning to 'take care' during the upcoming May half-term period. Turkey remains a popular destination for UK tourists thanks to its affordable prices and pleasant Mediterranean climate, offering numerous resorts, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters alongside bustling cities rich in cultural heritage.
Istanbul to Host UEFA Europa League Final
Among Turkey's most sought-after destinations is Istanbul, the only city in the world straddling two continents—Europe and Asia. The city is renowned for its impressive architecture, lively streets, flourishing street-food scene, and ancient monuments such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. However, the FCDO has released an alert specifically for football supporters travelling to Istanbul for the UEFA Europa League Final (UELF26) on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, featuring Aston Villa FC and SC Freiburg.
Key Advice for Travellers
The FCDO advises all Brits heading to Istanbul for the final to plan their movements around the city, arriving at the dedicated fan zone in Gezi Park, Taksim Square, or the stadium well in advance of the match. Travellers should follow instructions from local authorities and take care of personal possessions, including passports, especially in crowds and on public transport. Additional information is available on the Aston Villa FC website and in the UEFA event guide for UELF26.
Passport and Visa Requirements
All travellers to Turkey are strongly advised to ensure their passports are valid before arriving at the airport to avoid being refused entry. The FCDO states: "To enter Turkey, your passport must have an 'expiry date' at least 150 days after the date you arrive and at least 1 blank page." If entering at a land border, officials must stamp and date the passport at the crossing. Those needing to renew a passport can do so through the government website. The FCDO warns that entry will be denied if a traveller does not have a valid travel document or attempts to use a passport reported lost or stolen.
Visa-Free Travel for British Citizens
British citizen passport holders can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for leisure or business purposes. Holders of other types of British passports require a visa and should check requirements with the Turkish Embassy or Consulate General before travelling.
