After spending a long period of time travelling on the London Underground, a YouTuber has come to a verdict on which station he thinks is the worst in the capital. David Burnip, who now lives outside of London, returned to the city to fully experience the Tube and ranked the stations he visited.
The Search for the Worst Station
David Burnip, who lived in London for six years and now posts under the username Wandering Turnip, embarked on a mission to find the worst Tube station. In a 30-minute video, he travelled to several stations before narrowing it down to two contenders: Bank and Oxford Circus. Ultimately, he chose Oxford Circus as the worst.
David explained: “The worst one, well, I wanted to say Bank because you just end up spending so long in there but at least you’re on your own down there and if you did get stuck, a little bit of peace and quiet might be nice. It’s got to be Oxford Circus, just don’t do it to yourself, don’t do it.”
Rush Hour Chaos at Oxford Circus
Earlier in the video, David attempted to enter Oxford Circus during rush hour, a time when the station is typically crowded with commuters and tourists. He tried but failed to get in, observing that it was packed with people and admitting he didn’t want to “descend into that chaos.” He also noted that some entrances are closed during busy periods, saying: “Never know why they do this. They always have loads of it blocked off as if that’s useful. I’m not sure I can do it guys. I’m not sure I can descend into that chaos, I think we’re just going to have put Oxford Circus right up there with those bad, bad Tube stations.”
Despite his retreat, David managed to visit other stations such as Bank, London Victoria, and Neasden. His journey highlighted the varying experiences across the network.
Paddington Named Best Station
While David was searching for the worst, a recent poll by Tripadvisor named Paddington as the best station in the country. Paddington scored an average of 4.1 out of five from 2,000 reviews, praised for its facilities including toilets, cafes, and a statue of Paddington Bear. One reviewer said: “Nice station. Friendly staff. Good cafes. Large platforms. Pretty trains. Clean toilets. Tasty food and many different shops. Comfy seats. Clear departure boards. Big place. Easy underground links.” Another added: “It's an amazing place for Paddington fans. The statue is a nice photo place, and they have a Paddington shop with cute collectables.”
David's verdict on Oxford Circus serves as a warning to commuters and tourists alike, suggesting they avoid the station during peak times if possible.
