Tyrone Downing, a 19-year-old from Wolverhampton, has been jailed for four years at Wolverhampton Crown Court after committing a series of violent robberies at Wednesbury Parkway station, primarily targeting women. The sentence was handed down this week following his guilty pleas to three counts of robbery, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, and one count of attempted robbery.
Violent offences at tram station
Downing’s crimes began in July 2024, when he punched a woman in the face from behind after she tried to flee when he demanded her car keys. The only male victim was robbed of his phone on August 8, 2024, with a small knife used to slash the victim’s arm.
On August 27, 2024, CCTV footage captured Downing wearing a white balaclava as he approached a woman pushing a pram. He struck her in the head before snatching her car keys and fleeing in her Ford Fiesta. The final incident occurred on March 31, 2025, when he held a woman at knifepoint, demanded her keys, pushed her to the floor, and escaped in her Audi A3.
Investigation and social media evidence
British Transport Police linked Downing to all four offences through CCTV footage, victim accounts, and forensic evidence. Detectives also uncovered clips on Downing’s social media accounts showing him driving the stolen vehicles, which were never recovered.
Downing was arrested on April 19 in Wolverhampton. Detective Constable Aaron Murdoch of British Transport Police stated: ‘Tyrone Downing is a callous and violent offender who deliberately targeted women to steal their cars. The psychological impact of these offences should not be underestimated, and I hope his prison term provides the victims with some measure of justice and closure. Violent robbers have no place on the railway, and Downing will now have plenty of time behind bars to reflect on that fact.’
