A 'caring and thoughtful' London bus driver has died a day after being attacked at a bus stop on Battersea Bridge. Sergei Krajev was assaulted on the pavement while his bus was stationary shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Monday, May 18. The 64-year-old TfL worker suffered life-threatening injuries and died in hospital on Tuesday.
Suspect Charged
Gary Jones, 32, of Hospital Bridge Road, Twickenham, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm. He appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody. He will next appear at Kingston Crown Court on June 15.
Family Tribute
Sergei's family described him as 'thoughtful, tactful, and conscientious.' They said: 'We feel fortunate to have had such a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather in our lives. In his role as a bus driver, he was punctual, reliable and willing to help. He valued good relationships with his colleagues and approached his duties with care and dedication.'
They added: 'We are grateful to the police officers, healthcare workers and emergency services involved for their care, professionalism and compassion. Our thoughts are also with other public-facing transport workers who may be distressed or alarmed by this news.'
Mayor's Response
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also paid tribute, saying: 'My heart goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of Sergei Krajev, and all those affected by this appalling and senseless attack. There is zero tolerance for violence and abuse on our transport network, and a man has now been charged in connection with this incident.'
Police Appeal
The Metropolitan Police has launched a murder investigation. Detective Inspector Sarah Lee said: 'Our thoughts are with Sergei’s family, friends and colleagues after this tragic incident. We recognise the concern this will cause within the local community and among those who work across our public transport network.'
She added: 'This incident took place on one of London's busiest bridges and we are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to come forward. If you have dashcam or mobile phone footage of what happened, it is important that we see it.'
