Family's Heartbreaking Tribute to 'Kind-Hearted' Boy
The family of an 11-year-old boy who tragically lost his life on a railway level crossing in South London have spoken of their profound grief, describing their son as a thoughtful and kind-hearted child who loved spreading happiness.
Jaiden Shehata, a Year 7 student at Riddlesdown Collegiate in South Croydon, was walking to school on the morning of January 23 this year when the incident occurred at the Bourneview footpath crossing near Kenley.
Details of the Tragic Incident
An investigation into the tragedy revealed that Jaiden was looking at his phone, believed to be distracted by a video, as he entered the level crossing. At approximately 8.03am, he was struck by a Southern train travelling at about 50mph.
The train driver, upon seeing Jaiden start to cross, immediately sounded the horn and applied the emergency brake. Jaiden looked up in response to the warning but, tragically, did not have sufficient time to move clear before the train reached him.
A Life Full of Passion and Faith
In an emotional tribute, his devastated family shared memories of their beloved son. They said Jaiden was a keen Chelsea supporter and a talented footballer who always had a smile on his face.
"He was always thoughtful and kind hearted. He found such joy in helping people," the family stated. Jaiden was also deeply committed to his faith, having served as a Deacon at his church since the age of four, which was a tremendous source of pride for his family.
Riddlesdown Collegiate also paid tribute, describing Jaiden on its website as a popular and valued member of the school community. The school confirmed that pupils and staff plan to commemorate his life, stating they are "deeply saddened" by the loss and are providing support to all those affected.
