Major Commuter Chaos as Elizabeth Line Hit by Track Fault

Commuters across London and the Home Counties are facing a nightmare journey to work this morning after a significant track fault was discovered on a key section of the Elizabeth line. The issue, detected near Hayes & Harlington in west London, has forced severe speed restrictions, causing widespread cancellations and lengthy delays that are expected to last throughout the entire day.

What Caused the Disruption?

The root of the problem is a broken section of track in the Hayes and Harlington area. Network Rail engineers identified the defect, leading to the immediate implementation of a speed limit over the faulty segment for safety reasons. This precautionary measure means fewer trains can operate on the critical line connecting Reading, Heathrow Airport, and London Paddington.

National Rail confirmed the situation in a statement, saying: "A speed restriction over defective track near Hayes & Harlington means fewer trains are able to run through the affected area. As a result of this, trains between Reading, Heathrow Terminal 5 and London Paddington may be cancelled, delayed or revised."

Which Services Are Affected?

The disruption is not isolated to just the Elizabeth line. Three major rail operators are experiencing severe knock-on effects, impacting thousands of passengers. The affected services include:

  • Elizabeth line between Reading / Maidenhead / Heathrow Terminal 4 and Abbey Wood.
  • Great Western Railway (GWR) services on a vast number of routes, including those from Penzance, Plymouth, Cardiff Central, Bristol Temple Meads, Oxford, and many others into London Paddington.
  • Heathrow Express between Heathrow Terminal 5 and London Paddington.

Great Western Railway also issued a social media alert on the morning of November 11, 2025, warning that some services would be cancelled, delayed, or terminated and restarted from Reading.

Ongoing Impact and Travel Advice

With the disruption forecast to continue for the whole day, passengers are being strongly advised to allow significant extra time for their journeys and to check live travel updates before setting out. The broken track is not a simple, quick fix, and the speed restriction will remain in place until repairs are completed, severely limiting the capacity on one of London's busiest rail corridors. This incident highlights the vulnerability of the capital's transport network to infrastructure faults and the cascading effect it can have on commuter travel across the South East.
