A new map has revealed the sunniest and shadiest walking routes in London, thanks to a new feature from the popular sunny pub app Sunseekr. Called Sun Paths, the tool allows Londoners to plan their walks to maximize or avoid sunshine, based on real-time shadow calculations.
How Sun Paths Works
Sunseekr, created by self-described 'sun-obsessed architect' Mo Dawod, originally launched last summer to show which pubs in the capital are bathed in sunlight at certain times of day. The app quickly gained popularity and is now available in dozens of cities worldwide, also covering restaurants and cafés for non-drinkers. Earlier this year, Sunseekr was updated to display sunshine on specific pub terraces and gardens. Now, Dawod has introduced Sun Paths for pedestrians.
The feature calculates walking routes between two locations, adjusting for time of day. Users can select their preference for sunlight exposure: 'light', 'balanced', or 'sun-maxx'. For those willing to walk longer to stay in the sun, the app will plan a longer route. Conversely, it also offers a shadiest walks option for those seeking relief from the heat, which is particularly useful as London braces for warm weather.
Technology Behind the Feature
Sun Paths works by simulating shadows, taking into account the position of the sun in the sky and the height of nearby buildings. This allows the app to determine which streets and paths are in sunlight or shadow at any given time. Founder Mo Dawod explained his inspiration: 'Every day on my commute I walk along the river. On sunny days I'd somehow end up in the shade the whole way, while the opposite bank was glowing. It drove me mad. I wondered if I could fix it. London gets so few proper sunny days. Sun Paths is built so Londoners can enjoy every inch of the ones we do get.'
Availability
The feature is currently available only in London, but Sunseekr plans to roll it out across the UK this summer. Users can access Sun Paths through the Sunseekr app. With this new tool, Londoners can make the most of sunny days, whether they want to soak up the rays or stay cool in the shade.
