Three entire London Underground lines—the Circle, District, and Hammersmith and City lines—will be shut until 10:30am on Saturday, August 22, as part of a major upgrade project. The Metropolitan line will also be partially closed during the same period. Transport for London (TfL) is nearing the end of its scheme to modernise all four lines, with work this weekend focused on track work and signalling improvements.
Weekend Closures Across Five Tube Lines
The District line in West London will experience partial closures throughout Saturday and Sunday (August 23), along with a section of the Circle line. On Saturday, no service will run on the entire Circle line until 10:30am, and no service between Tower Hill and Edgware Road via Victoria until 2pm. Passengers are advised to use alternative Tube or local bus routes.
For the District line, no trains will run on the entire line until 10:30am on Saturday. There will be no service between Edgware Road or Embankment and Ealing Broadway, Kensington (Olympia), Richmond, and Wimbledon until 2pm. After 2pm, there will be no eastbound service from Stamford Brook to Barons Court and no westbound service from Earl’s Court to Stamford Brook. Services between Earl’s Court and Kensington (Olympia) and from Fulham Broadway to Wimbledon will also stop at 2pm. Alternative bus, Tube, or Mildmay line routes are recommended.
On Sunday, the District line will have no eastbound service from Stamford Brook to Barons Court and no westbound service from Earl’s Court to Stamford Brook for the entire day. Services between Earl’s Court and Kensington (Olympia) and from Fulham Broadway to Wimbledon also won’t run throughout Sunday.
Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan, and Piccadilly Line Disruptions
The Hammersmith and City line will have no service on the entire line until 10:30am on Saturday, and passengers should use alternative Tube or bus routes. The Metropolitan line will have no service between Aldgate and Harrow-on-the-Hill until 10:30am on Saturday.
The Piccadilly line is shut throughout Thursday, August 20, between Cockfosters and Uxbridge while new trains are being tested. The entire line will also shut overnight on Friday, along with the section between Hyde Park Corner and Acton Town until 2pm on Saturday. Caledonian Road will be shut all weekend to passengers travelling eastbound. From Friday, August 21, until Monday, August 24, eastbound trains will not stop at Caledonian Road. Passengers wanting to travel eastbound from Caledonian Road are advised to travel to Kings Cross St Pancras westbound and change to the eastbound platform. Eastbound passengers wanting to alight at Caledonian Road should get off at Holloway Road and switch to the westbound platform. The Friday Night Tube will not run on the Piccadilly line on Friday, August 21.
Overground and Elizabeth Line Closures
On Sunday, August 23, the Mildmay line will have no service between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction until 9:30am, and no trains between Camden Road and Stratford after 10:15pm. The Windrush line will have no trains between New Cross Gate and both West Croydon and Crystal Palace, and no service between Highbury and Islington and Dalston Junction after 10:15pm. The Elizabeth line will have no service between Maidenhead and West Drayton until 9am on Sunday.
