Transport for London (TfL) has released a revamped walking Tube map that shows how long it takes to walk between stations, offering a street-level alternative to crowded carriages. The map, launched some years ago, highlights that many Zone 1 stations are just a 10-minute stroll apart, making walking a viable option during peak hours.
Walking as a Quick Alternative During Busy Periods
TfL stated: "Walking can be a quick and easy way to get around, particularly when travelling during the busiest times, which are 5:45am-8:15am and 4pm-5:30pm, Monday to Friday." The map shows the on-foot distances between stations on the same line, providing a practical tool for commuters and leisure travellers alike.
For those who prefer the Tube, Overground, DLR, or Elizabeth line, the walking map adds a new dimension to navigating the capital. Even South Londoners who favour the Tram may find the walking times useful for short hops.
Examples of Longer Walking Journeys
While central London stations are close, some outer stations require significant effort on foot. For instance, the journey from Highbury and Islington to King's Cross – just a single Overground stop – takes a brisk 35-minute walk. Similarly, the stretch between Surrey Quays and Queens Road Peckham amounts to a 38-minute walk, despite being only one Overground stop apart.
These examples illustrate that walking is not always the quickest option, but it can be a pleasant alternative when avoiding busy trains or enjoying the city's streets.

In addition to the walking map, TfL published 3D diagrams of every London Underground station's public spaces following a 2015 freedom of information request. These diagrams show train tubes, pedestrian tunnels, staircases, and more, offering a detailed view of each station's layout.
