TfL Rejects Calls to Extend Superloop SL14 Bus Route to Chingford Station
Transport for London has firmly rejected calls to extend the newly approved SL14 Superloop bus route to Chingford station, despite significant public backing and advocacy from local representatives. This decision comes after a consultation process where an overwhelming 83 percent of respondents expressed that the route would be convenient for their travel needs.
Operational Challenges Cited as Key Reason for Rejection
TfL officials have stated that extending the SL14 to Chingford station would require additional buses to operate the route effectively. They emphasized that the current terminal point at Chingford Hatch, which lacks railway connections, was chosen due to logistical constraints. Transport bosses noted that the SL14 could not terminate at Chingford station without altering other local bus routes, particularly the existing 97 service that already connects Stratford and Chingford.
Geoff Hobbs, TfL's director of public transport service planning, commented on the decision, saying, "We welcome the positive response to the consultation of the new SL14 express route. This service will play an important role in improving connections and reducing journey times across east and northeast London." He added that work has commenced to prepare the SL14 for operation, with a targeted launch in 2027.
Local Advocacy for Enhanced Connectivity
London Assembly Member Emma Best had championed the extension, arguing that it would transform the SL14 into a "truly game-changing proposal" by providing direct access to Chingford station. This station is situated on the Weaver line, offering quick journeys to Hackney Downs in 15 minutes and Liverpool Street in 27 minutes, thereby enhancing interchange possibilities for passengers.
Ms. Best also raised concerns about the current terminal area in Chingford Hatch, which is often congested with buses. She warned that adding SL14 services there could exacerbate disruption for drivers and commuters. Despite these points, TfL maintained that the extension was not feasible under current operational frameworks.
Details of the Approved SL14 Route and Service Adjustments
The SL14 express service, set to launch next year, will run between Stratford and Chingford Hatch, with multiple stops in Leyton and Walthamstow. It will operate mostly parallel to the existing route 158, with buses scheduled every 12 minutes. As part of this new service, there will be a slight reduction in 158 services, from one bus every six minutes to one every eight minutes, to accommodate the SL14 without overwhelming the network.
This decision underscores TfL's ongoing efforts to enhance the Superloop network, following the recent launch of the SL11 in January. While the extension to Chingford station has been ruled out for now, TfL encourages customers to stay informed about updates as the SL14 preparation progresses toward its 2027 introduction.
