Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that 60% of Underground stations now have mobile coverage, following the upgrade of nine more sections of the Tube network. The latest additions bring the capital closer to TfL's goal of connecting the entire network with 4G and 5G by the end of the year.
Nine new sections now connected
The newly upgraded sections include stretches on the Circle, Hammersmith and City, and Metropolitan lines between Great Portland Street and Euston Square, and Farringdon and Barbican. On the Northern line, coverage has been added between Euston (Bank branch) and Camden Town, Oval and Stockwell, and South Wimbledon and Morden.
The Victoria line now has service between Victoria and Pimlico, while the Jubilee line covers Swiss Cottage to St John's Wood. The Bakerloo line has been upgraded between Edgware Road and Marylebone, and the Piccadilly line between Knightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner.
All four major UK operators – Three, EE, Vodafone and Virgin Media O2 – are participating in the rollout. The project also hosts the new Emergency Services Network (ESN), giving first responders access to life-saving data and information during live incidents.
Further upgrades planned
TfL has confirmed that 60% of Underground stations across the network have been upgraded, but further work is planned. This includes 'installing infrastructure, building connection points, and testing systems', according to TfL.
The tunnel between Vauxhall and Stockwell, which currently disrupts continuous service between Brixton and Green Park on the Victoria line, will soon have coverage, though no date has been confirmed. Windrush and DLR stations located below ground are also set to be upgraded to receive 4G and 5G signals. The Elizabeth line already has continuous mobile coverage throughout.
More than 600 engineers working overnight
Rebecca Bissell, Director of Information Technology at TfL, said: 'We are delighted to be delivering more mobile coverage to our customers across our Tube network. Providing mobile coverage across our network means customers can stay better connected while they travel, allowing them to stay in contact with friends and family, shop online and keep up with the latest news and sports results.'
She added: 'We remain focused on having 4G and 5G mobile coverage across the whole Tube network by the end of the year, and more than 600 engineers work hard overnight during limited engineering hours to help deliver this.'
Meanwhile, robotaxis have launched on London streets as part of a controlled trial between Uber and Wayve. Customers can choose a robotaxi at no extra cost when selecting a traditional vehicle, though a human driver remains present. Riders can unlock doors and start trips via the Uber app.
