London Underground Chaos: Over Half of Tube Lines Disrupted During Rush Hour

Travel on the London Underground has come to a grinding halt this afternoon due to a cascade of issues across the network, leaving commuters stranded during the critical evening rush hour. Over half of the Tube lines are experiencing significant delays, with some routes completely paralyzed by technical failures and safety alerts.

Severe Delays on Multiple Key Lines

The Circle, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith & City lines are among the worst affected, with services suspended following a fire alert at Edgware Road station. Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed severe delays on these routes and is advising passengers to use alternative transport options.

TfL stated: ‘Severe delays due to an earlier fire alert at Edgware Road. Tickets are being accepted on London Buses.’

Meanwhile, the Victoria line is grappling with severe delays caused by a points failure at King’s Cross St Pancras station, further exacerbating the congestion across central London.

Elizabeth Line and Overground Also Impacted

The Elizabeth line is reporting minor delays between Heathrow Terminal T5 and T4 and Abbey Wood in both directions, as well as between Abbey Wood and Reading. This disruption stems from a trespasser on the tracks between Hayes and Harlington and Ealing Broadway, according to TfL officials.

On the Overground network, the Mildmay line is suspended between Clapham Junction and Shepherds Bush, adding to the widespread transport chaos. Passengers are being redirected to buses and other rail services, including the Weaver Line, Suffragette Line, Great Northern, Thameslink, Greater Anglia, South Western Railway, and Southeastern.

Commuters Advised to Seek Alternatives

With the evening rush hour in full swing, TfL is urging travelers to plan ahead and consider using buses or other rail networks to complete their journeys. The combination of incidents has created a perfect storm of disruption, affecting thousands of Londoners trying to get home.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of London’s transport infrastructure during peak hours and underscores the need for robust contingency plans. As investigations into the causes continue, commuters are left to navigate a fragmented network with limited options.
