London Stadium in Stratford could host significantly more music concerts under new proposals that would reduce the number of sporting events held at the venue each year. The plans, submitted to Newham Council, aim to cut annual sports event days from 87 to 70, while increasing the number of non-sports events from 10 to 24 per year.
Stadium bosses, who operate the West Ham United home ground, said the reduction in sports events is necessary “to balance the increase in the number of concerts and other leisure events the stadium can stage.” The venue, which has an 80,000 capacity, has previously hosted performances by Foo Fighters, Burna Boy, Muse, and Green Day.
No Impact on West Ham Fixtures
West Ham United supporters will be unaffected by the changes, according to stadium officials. The club’s fixtures and the stadium’s 62,500 capacity for matches will remain unchanged, as West Ham’s concession agreement guarantees their right to play at the venue.
A spokesperson for the stadium clarified: “There is no impact on West Ham matches or their capacity (62,500). West Ham are entitled to play matches at the stadium as per the concession agreement, under which there is no circumstance they could play 70 matches a year.”
Financial Pressures and Event Balance
The stadium, owned by the Greater London Authority, reported to City Hall last month that it loses £19 million annually because the rent paid by West Ham United does not cover running costs. The proposed increase in concerts and leisure events is part of efforts to address this financial gap.
Currently limited to 10 non-sports events per year, stadium bosses want to raise this cap to 24. The remaining sports event days would be used for other activities, as the spokesperson explained: “The stadium can use the balance of sports events after West Ham matches for international friendlies, baseball, athletics etc. There have been typically two to three such events in a year.”
Potential for Major Athletics Championships
The venue could also accommodate large-scale athletics events within the new framework. According to the spokesperson, “If a major athletics championships was held it could increase to 20 in a year. This remains all well within the 70 sport event cap, allowing for West Ham matches.”
The proposal is now with Newham Council for consideration. If approved, the stadium would see a significant shift toward music and leisure events while maintaining its role as a Premier League football venue.
