Major London Transport Disruption: Overground Line Shutdown and Multiple Tube Closures This Weekend
Transport for London has announced significant travel disruptions across the capital this weekend, with an entire London Overground line set to close completely and six London Underground lines experiencing partial or full service suspensions. The extensive maintenance works will affect thousands of passengers traveling on Saturday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1.
Complete Overground Line Shutdown
The Lioness line will see a complete closure between Euston and Watford Junction throughout the entire weekend. This major shutdown is due to essential track maintenance being carried out by Network Rail. Passengers who normally use this route have been advised to seek alternative transportation options, including other Tube lines, rail services, or the additional 720 bus service that will operate during the closure period.
Multiple Underground Line Disruptions
Alongside the Overground closure, Transport for London has confirmed substantial disruptions affecting multiple Underground lines. The District line will experience a significant shutdown, with no service operating between Earl's Court and both Whitechapel and Kensington (Olympia) stations throughout the weekend.
The Windrush line in South London will also face closures, with no trains running between New Cross Gate and both Crystal Palace and West Croydon. Additionally, this line will be closed between Canada Water and Clapham Junction, further complicating travel across South London.
Additional Service Disruptions
Transport for London has warned that several other lines will experience various levels of disruption. The Bakerloo, Circle, Hammersmith and City, Jubilee, Northern, Suffragette, and Elizabeth lines will all face service alterations or partial closures. The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) will also be affected by the maintenance works.
Specific disruptions include:
- Bakerloo line: No service between Queen's Park and Harrow & Wealdstone
- Circle line: No service between Edgware Road and Aldgate via Victoria
- Hammersmith and City line: No trains between Whitechapel and Barking
- Elizabeth line: Multiple disruptions including no service between Paddington and Ealing Broadway until 7:45am on Sunday
- DLR: No service between Tower Gateway and Shadwell on Sunday
Alternative Travel Options
Transport for London has recommended that affected passengers use alternative Tube lines where possible, along with local bus routes that will continue to operate. Replacement bus services will be available for some of the closures, including between Canada Water and Clapham Junction for the Windrush line disruption.
Passengers are strongly advised to plan their journeys in advance using TfL Go or CityMapper applications to stay updated with real-time travel information. These digital tools will provide the most current information about service alterations, replacement bus services, and suggested alternative routes.
Weekend Travel Planning Essential
With such extensive disruptions affecting multiple transport networks simultaneously, Londoners and visitors are urged to allow additional travel time and consider alternative routes. The combination of Overground closures and multiple Underground line disruptions represents one of the most significant weekend transport challenges in recent months.
Transport for London has emphasized that these maintenance works are essential for ensuring the long-term reliability and safety of London's transport infrastructure. While acknowledging the inconvenience caused to passengers, TfL maintains that these weekend works minimize disruption compared to weekday closures that would affect commuter travel.
