The Cockpit, a micropub tucked inside a florist's in Chislehurst, has been named Greater London's Pub of the Year by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale). The pub, which opened in December 2020, combines a bar with a florist shop and focuses on cask ale and fine ciders from independent producers.
A Quirky Hidden Gem in Royal Parade
Located in Royal Parade, a row of independent shops and bars in South East London, The Cockpit is run by Adam Miller and Paul Steadman. The name references the historic cockfighting that once took place on Chislehurst Common. The pub also supports local community projects.
On a searing hot day, the pub's old-school charms are immediately apparent: a red phone box, Victorian lamp, and hanging baskets outside. Inside, the scent of flowers mingles with the bar's rustic interior of exposed wood, a traditional fireplace, and plenty of seating.
Real Ale and Fine Ciders on Offer
The bar serves a range of local country beers, stouts, and aromatic pale ales, none of which are chain brands. Stewart Carr, who visited for the review, opted for a pint of Sussex Pale (3.5% ABV), which he described as earthy, refreshing, and with just enough hops to appeal to lager drinkers.
On a second trip to the bar, the barman recommended Rothaus Pils (5.1% ABV), a German lager kept in the fridge. Carr found it crisp and refined with a faint hoppiness, and noted he would order a cask of it.
Recognition from CAMRA
Miller and Steadman expressed their surprise and delight at the CAMRA award, saying they were "flabbersmacked" and "gobbergeasted" to be recognised as the top pub in Greater London. They thanked their team and supporters for their enthusiasm over the past five years.
