Easter Tube Line Shutdown and Major Rail Disruption

Easter Weekend Brings Major Transport Disruption Across London

Transport for London has announced significant disruptions to the capital's transport network over the upcoming Easter weekend, with an entire Underground line scheduled for complete closure. The Hammersmith & City line will not operate from Good Friday through Easter Monday due to essential track maintenance work.

Comprehensive Underground and Overground Closures

Passengers are advised to plan alternative journeys using other Tube lines, rail services, or replacement bus routes. The disruption extends beyond the Hammersmith & City line, affecting multiple transport services across London.

London Underground closures include:

  • Bakerloo line: No service between Stonebridge Park and Harrow & Wealdstone on Friday and Monday, with additional closures between Queen's Park and Harrow & Wealdstone on Saturday and Sunday.
  • District line: No service between Whitechapel and Upminster throughout the Easter weekend, plus closures between Earl's Court and Kensington (Olympia).
  • Hammersmith & City line: Complete closure of the entire line from Friday through Monday with rail replacement buses operating.

Widespread Network Rail Maintenance Projects

The engineering works form part of a substantial £400 million investment program aimed at enhancing reliability on the West Coast Main Line. This includes a specific £22.2 million investment targeting improvements at Willesden, Wembley, and Harrow & Wealdstone stations.

These stations will receive comprehensive upgrades including new tracks, modernized overhead power equipment, and platform enhancements. Network Rail officials emphasize that Easter weekend provides a crucial opportunity for these essential improvements.

Additional Transport Service Disruptions

London Overground closures:

  • Lioness line services will be suspended between Willesden Junction and Watford Junction on Friday and Monday, with additional closures between Euston and Watford Junction on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Mildmay line will have no service between Willesden Junction and Richmond on Sunday.

Other transport services affected:

  • DLR services between Bank/Tower Gateway and Poplar/West India Quay will be suspended from Friday through Wednesday.
  • Elizabeth line services will experience disruptions between Paddington and Ealing Broadway on Sunday morning, with additional service adjustments on Monday evening.
  • Tram services between Wimbledon and Therapia Lane will be suspended from Friday evening through all day Saturday.

Major Euston Station Shutdown

Adding to the travel chaos, Euston station will undergo a six-day complete shutdown affecting intercity services. From Good Friday through Wednesday, no services will operate between Euston and Milton Keynes, forcing trains from Scotland, northwest England, and the West Midlands to terminate at Milton Keynes Central.

Rail replacement buses will operate between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford or Potters Bar, where passengers can connect to services for Central London. London Northwestern Railway is accepting tickets on Thameslink and East Midlands Railway services to accommodate displaced passengers.

Official Statement on Engineering Works

Jake Kelly, Network Rail regional director for North West and Central, explained the reasoning behind scheduling major works during the holiday period: "We know how important Bank Holidays are - particularly at Easter, when families and friends come together - and that's why we work hard to keep as much of the network open as possible while carrying out these vital upgrades."

"However, Bank Holidays are also among the least busy times on the railway, and the four-day period at Easter gives us a valuable opportunity to complete projects that simply can't be delivered during a normal weekend. This ensures we maximise the time our teams are out working on the tracks."
