A young woman has been released on bail after a car was allegedly driven at crowds in the heart of Manchester in the early hours of Sunday morning, leaving one man in hospital.
Chaotic Scenes on Deansgate
Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a disturbance on South King Street shortly after 5am on December 15, 2024. The incident quickly escalated, with the chaos spreading onto the nearby Deansgate area, which was still busy with people on festive nights out.
Viral social media clips, originally shared on Instagram, captured a grey BMW being driven erratically. The footage showed the vehicle travelling on the wrong side of the road, causing one person to fall over nearby. The car was then seen turning, speeding through the junction with Bridge Street, and going through a red light.
Onlookers' Terror and Vehicle Crash
As the drama unfolded, screams could be heard on the video. Onlookers were heard shouting warnings such as ‘he’s going to kill someone’ and ‘stand out of the way’ as people attempted to dodge the moving car on multiple occasions.
The situation intensified when a fight broke out between a group in the street. The vehicle then turned towards the pavement, crashing into a barrier set up for roadworks. Several men appeared to try and open the car doors before it sped off again.
Arrest and Hospital Treatment
In an update, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a 25-year-old man was taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The force also announced that an 18-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident. She was held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit assault and has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
The shocking event follows a separate high-profile case this week, where a driver is being sentenced for an attack on crowds of Liverpool football fans in May, which left well over 100 people injured.
