Major Infrastructure Investment for Wandsworth's Roads and Pavements
Wandsworth Council has announced a substantial £10.3 million investment for the resurfacing of roads and pavements across the borough during the 2026-27 financial year. This initiative is a key component of an ambitious decade-long program, totaling £100 million, aimed at revitalizing the local highway network from 2024 to 2034.
A Decade of Transformation
The council launched this record-breaking investment scheme in 2024-25 with an initial £8 million allocation, which was increased to £10.3 million for 2025-26. Moving forward, the authority plans to maintain this £10.3 million annual expenditure for the remainder of the ten-year period to systematically upgrade Wandsworth's extensive highways infrastructure.
A recent report from council officers emphasized that this sustained investment is designed to reverse the decline of the borough's highway network, a challenge faced nationally as budgets tighten. The program is expected to deliver significant long-term improvements, substantially reducing the need for reactive maintenance, enhancing public safety, decreasing resident complaints, and lowering the number of accident and injury claims.
"The availability of a safe and serviceable highway network is essential to allow ready access around and through the borough, as well as providing access to residents and businesses. Wandsworth’s economic vitality depends upon highway links that are safe and fit for purpose. The management of this valuable asset is, therefore, one of the utmost importance," the council report stated.
Scope and Responsibility
Wandsworth encompasses approximately 440 kilometers of roads. The local council is responsible for maintaining about 93 percent of this highway network, while Transport for London (TfL) manages the remaining 7 percent. The newly published report details the specific carriageways and footways scheduled for resurfacing in the upcoming year.
The council's cabinet is set to make a final decision on approving the proposed list of works during a meeting scheduled for February 23.

This flexible approach ensures the program can adapt to changing circumstances and maximize the impact of the investment on Wandsworth's transportation infrastructure.
