Three people have been killed and one seriously injured following a serious crash involving two cars on the A1 in Northumberland, a road that has seen a spate of collisions in recent months. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon near Alnwick, south of Lindisfarne Castle and the Scottish Borders, prompting a prolonged closure of the major route.
Emergency services were called to the scene between Denwick and South Charlton at approximately 2:30 pm after reports of a collision. According to initial investigations, a silver Volkswagen Polo traveling north collided with a southbound red Hyundai i20. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The driver of the Hyundai, a man in his 80s, and a female passenger in her 70s were pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger in the Volkswagen, aged in her 60s, also succumbed to her injuries at the crash site. The driver of the Polo, a man in his 60s, was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle with serious injuries, according to Chronicle Live.
Recent crashes on the A1
This latest collision has brought renewed attention to the safety of the A1, which has experienced a series of accidents recently. On May 4, two people were injured in a crash involving two cars and a motorhome near Alnwick. Last month, four people were hurt in another crash on the A1 near Belford.
David Smith, the MP for North Northumberland, expressed his concern to the Northumberland Gazette: “First and foremost it is awful to hear of more collisions along the A1. My thoughts are with all those affected. The A1 is not safe enough. There have been no significant improvements along the road since 2014, and pressure will increase as we enter the summer season.”
Local leaders call for action
Local leaders have also called for urgent action to improve safety on the road. The repeated incidents have raised questions about the adequacy of existing measures and the need for upgrades. Metro has approached emergency services for comment but has not yet received a response.
The tragic event underscores the ongoing concerns about road safety on this key arterial route. With summer traffic expected to increase, calls for improvements are likely to intensify.
