Shocking CCTV footage from Romania shows the moment a driver's car was sent 'flying' over a roundabout after he reportedly fainted at the wheel, in an incident quickly dubbed the 'first flying car'.
The 'Flying Car' Incident in Oradea
The astonishing event was captured on camera in the western Romanian city of Oradea on December 3, 2025. The video, which has since gone viral online, shows a Mercedes hurtling towards oncoming traffic before clipping a curb and becoming airborne.
Moments after the vehicle flew several metres into the air, it collided head-on with another car. The 49-year-old driver was trapped in the wreckage and had to be rescued by emergency services before being taken to hospital.
Miraculous Survival and Medical Cause
Remarkably, the motorist survived the high-impact crash. According to a local media report, he sustained multiple fractures but no life-threatening injuries.
Investigators stated the cause was a hypoglycemic crisis, where blood sugar levels drop dangerously low, causing the driver to lose consciousness. This led to him entering the roundabout the wrong way at very high speed.
Photos from the scene reveal the extensive damage to the car, with its bonnet completely crumpled and windows shattered.
Legal Repercussions and Online Reaction
Following the crash, the driver faced legal consequences. He was fined 1,600 Romanian Lei (approximately £274) and had his licence suspended for 90 days.
The viral video sparked disbelief and concern on social media. One viewer commented, "My God, I had the video on full screen and it legit scared me. I hope the driver is okay." Many others drew comparisons to scenes from Back to the Future or the Grand Theft Auto video game series.
This is not the first incident of a vehicle launching from a sloped roundabout. In 2018, a similar event in Norfolk, UK, saw a silver Citroën van fly through the air after hitting a roundabout, injuring three people.
