Two lanes remain closed on the M6 northbound near Birmingham Airport after a lorry fire engulfed the vehicle this afternoon, causing severe rush hour delays. National Highways reported delays of around 50 minutes on approach, with congestion stretching back five miles.
Fire between junctions J4A and J5
The HGV blaze occurred between junction J4A (M42 interchange) and J5 (Sutton Coldfield) on the northbound carriageway. Dramatic scenes showed the lorry completely destroyed by the flames, though no injuries were reported. The fire also damaged the road surface, which will require emergency resurfacing later this evening, according to National Highways.
In a statement on social media, National Highways West Midlands said: 'Lanes 1 & 2 (of 4) remain closed on the #M6 north between J4A #M42 junction & J5 #SuttonColdfield following a fire. The road will need to be resurfaced, which will take place later this evening. Current delays of 50 minutes on approach, with 5 miles of congestion.'
Impact on Birmingham Airport and wider travel
Birmingham Airport warned passengers of the disruption and advised allowing extra time for journeys to and from the airport. The incident compounded a difficult Friday for motorists, as a separate serious crash on the M40 in Oxfordshire caused over two-hour delays at its peak.
The M40 northbound was closed between J10 near Ardley and J11 near Banbury after a serious collision shortly after 11:30 am. National Highways confirmed: 'Thames Valley emergency services attended the scene and Thames Valley Police remain in attendance. All traffic caught within the closure has been released.' The road has since reopened, but residual delays remain.

Motorists are advised to check live traffic updates before travelling and to expect residual delays in the affected areas. The M6 resurfacing work is scheduled to take place this evening, which may lead to further overnight closures. Commuters should plan alternative routes where possible.
