The blaze erupted at Ventura Park on Colney Street, St Albans, an industrial park housing businesses including film studios, padel courts, and logistics firms. The fire, described as 'significant' by National Highways, has led to the closure of the UK's busiest motorway as a precaution due to smoke, debris, and the risk of secondary explosions affecting the carriageway.
National Highways stated: 'The M25 is closed in both directions between J22 (St Albans) and J21A due to a significant fire at a commercial premises close to the motorway. Full closures are now in place in both directions. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have 15 fire appliances at the scene tackling the blaze. Due to the risk of secondary explosions, along with smoke and debris affecting the carriageway, the motorway remains closed as a precaution. The incident is also close to the railway line, and Network Rail have a representative on site liaising with the fire service.'
Delays and diversions in place
Drivers in the area face delays of around 60 minutes in both directions on approach to the closures, with approximately three miles of congestion building. National Highways advised motorists to consider using other routes. A diversion route has been published on their official channels.
The fire service urged local residents to take precautions. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: 'We are currently responding to an incident in Ventura Park, Old Parkbury Lane, Colney Street, St Albans. If you live locally, we advise to keep doors and windows closed and please avoid the area while emergency crews carry out their work.'
Impact on local community and transport
Staff at a nearby activities centre said they were aware of the fire but were not directly affected. One staff member told Metro: 'Trains are still running because it is blowing to the other direction. The motorway is also shut.' Residents in Potters Bar, about 10 miles east along the M25, reported seeing smoke from the blaze.
A construction worker on the opposite side of the motorway said: 'Watching it now from the construction site on the other side of the M25. ALP and other pumps on scene.' The incident adds to earlier disruption on the M25 after a separate crash on the anticlockwise carriageway near the A1(M) junction. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, with the motorway remaining closed as a precaution until the risk of secondary explosions subsides.
