A serious road traffic collision brought a key section of the M25 to a standstill on Saturday, causing extensive delays for drivers in Essex.
Motorway closed after midday crash
The incident occurred shortly before lunchtime on December 27, 2025, leading to the closure of all lanes on the clockwise carriageway. The affected stretch was between Junction 11 for the M11 and Junction 28 for Brentwood.
Emergency services, including Essex Police, were quickly dispatched to the scene. Both the AA and National Highways described the collision as serious, prompting immediate action to manage the escalating traffic chaos.
Diversions and miles of tailbacks
With one of the UK's busiest roads blocked, long queues began to form almost immediately. Significant tailbacks were reported on the approaching M11 near its junction with the orbital motorway.
Authorities implemented a formal diversion to guide stranded motorists around the closure. Drivers were instructed to leave the M25 and follow the A406 North Circular Road, continuing onto the A12 at the Redbridge Interchange.
Despite these measures, queues stretching for several miles developed, with motorists strongly advised to avoid the area entirely if possible.
Road reopens with residual delays
The closure lasted for several hours while the scene was dealt with. National Highways: East confirmed via social media that the vehicle involved in the crash had been recovered and the carriageway was fully reopened by approximately 1.40pm.
However, the agency warned travellers to expect residual delays of up to 30 minutes on the approach to the area as the backlog of traffic gradually cleared. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of the UK's major road networks, where a single serious collision can disrupt thousands of journeys.
