London's 'Most Expensive' Petrol Pump: £240 for a Tank Amid Fuel Price Surge

Motorists across the UK are scrambling to locate the cheapest fuel options as prices have soared dramatically since the onset of the Iran war. The stark disparities in pricing between different petrol stations have left drivers stunned, as they navigate escalating costs in search of the best deals.

Eyewatering Prices at Chelsea Forecourt

At a Gulf service station situated on Sloane Avenue in London's affluent Chelsea borough, drivers were brought to a halt by the shocking price tags displayed for petrol and diesel. The station charged an astonishing 299.9p per litre for fuel today, marking it as one of the most expensive forecourts in the country.

An eyewitness reported to Metro that a driver of a Range Rover paid over £240 for approximately 81 litres, which constitutes an almost full tank for that SUV model. In another instance, a woman filling up her small Nissan Micra abruptly stopped her refuelling process upon realizing the cost, opting to add only four litres instead.

'We observed around three to four cars during the hour we were present at the location,' the witness stated. 'This is undoubtedly one of the most exorbitant prices I have ever encountered,' he further emphasized.

National Fuel Price Milestones

The motoring expert RAC announced yesterday that the average petrol price has breached the 'unwelcome' threshold of 150p per litre. Meanwhile, diesel prices are nearing 180p, currently standing at 177.78p just ahead of the Easter weekend.

Metro has reached out to Gulf Oil for an official comment regarding these elevated prices. The broader context of these increases is tied to the devastating war initiated by the US and Israel over a month ago, which has resulted in thousands of casualties in the region and prompted Iran to block travel through the Strait of Hormuz.

Global Oil Trade Disruption

The blockade of this crucial maritime route has plunged the global oil trade into chaos, raising concerns about potential fuel shortages if the conflict persists. Additionally, there have been allegations of 'price gouging' at certain forecourts, leading to a warning issued by Energy Secretary Ed Miliband last month.

Simon Williams, the head of policy at RAC, commented: 'With the eagerly anticipated four-day Easter weekend approaching, the expense of traveling by car will be significantly higher this year. Average prices at motorway services are 166p for unleaded and 182p for diesel, so drivers embarking on long journeys must strategize their refuelling stops meticulously.'

'Our top recommendation is to shop around for fuel and utilize free applications like myRAC to ensure you never pay more than absolutely necessary,' Williams advised.

Industry Assurance and Consumer Advice

The fuel industry has reassured consumers that supply chains across Britain are operating normally, with no indications of shortages. Elizabeth de Jong, CEO of Fuels Industry UK, and Gordon Balmer, executive director of the Petrol Retailers Association, jointly stated: 'Supply throughout the UK is flowing as usual, and there is no requirement to alter typical buying habits. If one forecourt is busy, alternatives are available.'

Drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and compare prices, especially during this period of heightened costs and geopolitical tension.
