Motorists in the North London borough of Islington are facing significant disruption throughout January, with a series of essential roadworks and public space improvements leading to multiple lane closures and full road shutdowns. Some streets will be inaccessible for drivers for up to eleven days.
Key Road and Lane Closures Across the Borough
The new year has begun with immediate works causing traffic issues. Offord Road near Highbury Corner is closed until Wednesday, January 7 for gas works, with nearby Liverpool Road under temporary traffic controls until Thursday, January 8. Water maintenance has also shut Stavordale Road from Monday, January 5 until Friday, January 9.
Further utility works are scheduled across the month. Thames Water is carrying out extensive works on Amwell Street and River Street in Clerkenwell until Thursday, January 15, with delays expected. Overnight lane closures on Isledon Road will occur twice: from January 11, 10pm to 5am, and again from January 28 at 11.59pm until 3am on January 29.
Other confirmed closures include:
- Berry Street: Closed until Thursday, January 8 at 11.59pm for fibre broadband installation.
- Caedmon Road: Closed between Monday, January 12 and Friday, January 16 for water works.
- Whistler Street: Closed on January 13 from 8am until 6pm.
- Berriman Road: Lanes closed until 12.10pm on Friday, January 9.
Major Thoroughfares and Public Space Projects
Several of the borough's main roads will also be affected. Essex Road will see partial closures on January 21 from 9.30am to 1pm, followed by traffic controls overnight on January 29 from 9pm to 2am due to water works.
On Upper Street and Islington High Street, Transport for London (TfL) works closed lanes from Sunday, January 4 until Tuesday, January 6 at 3.30am. Thames Water will then begin additional work at Islington High Street between Thursday, January 8 and Wednesday, January 14.
City Road will be closed overnight from Tuesday, January 13 at 9pm to 5am the next morning. Drivers should also expect delays on Lever Street from January 10-11 for telecoms and water installations.
Long-Term Improvements and Travel Advice
Near Smithfield, more permanent changes are underway as part of Islington Council's plan to create a "greener, healthier and more welcoming" public space. Cowcross Street and St John Street will remain closed until February 27 and March 3 respectively.
In the north of the borough, overnight works at the Stroud Green Road entrance to Finsbury Park are scheduled for Thursday, January 29 from 11.59pm until 5am on Friday, January 30. Lanes on Sussex Way will be closed from Monday, January 12 until Friday, January 23 for Thames Water utility works.
The council has stated that all works requiring temporary traffic management are expected to be complete by the end of February, but these dates may be subject to change. Drivers are strongly advised to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for journeys through Islington this month.
