Council Worker Left Unable to Work After Shocking Collision
A dedicated Islington Council worker has been left seriously injured and unable to work following a terrifying hit-and-run incident while she was cycling home. Angela Doocey, a 35-year-old park manager, was struck by a grey Peugeot on Barnsbury Street at approximately 2:30 pm on Monday, September 8.
'I Was Petrified': The Moment of the Impact
Angela described the harrowing moment the car approached her. She told reporters that the vehicle came speeding from behind before slowing down and almost stopping next to her. Without warning, the driver then clipped her front wheel, causing her to fall from the Lime bike she was riding. The motorist then sped away from the scene, leaving her injured on the road.
"I was petrified, I just froze," Angela recalled. "I was thinking what's going to happen next? But he just left me there on the floor despite seeing all the blood. It's just horrible, I just want the person to be caught."
Painful Injuries and Mounting Costs
The consequences of the hit-and-run have been severe for the long-time Islington resident. The collision left her with a cracked tooth and a broken elbow, along with substantial bruising on her leg. Her recovery has involved extensive and costly medical treatment.
Angela has undergone surgery to have plates inserted in her elbow and is now facing a long course of intense physiotherapy to regain full movement in her right arm. She has also been forced to seek treatment from a private dentist due to the dental injury, adding to the financial strain.
Police Investigation and Appeal for Witnesses
The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation and have informed Angela that the suspect was likely driving a rental car. A temporary incident sign has been erected in Barnsbury Street, appealing for information.
In particular, Angela is hoping to reach out to the individuals who came to her aid immediately after the crash. She is asking for a woman who witnessed the collision and a couple who assisted her by moving and parking the bike in nearby Liverpool Road to come forward.
Angela, who has worked in Barnard Park for 16 years and lived in Islington her entire life, has been unable to work since the incident. "I've never not worked since college," she said, explaining the mental toll of being suddenly inactive. The police reference for the incident is CAD 4373/08Sep25.
