Drunk Driver's Rampage: Fence Smashed, Bus Hit in Hackney

East London Drunk Driver's Violent Spree Ends with Public Intervention

A 26-year-old man from Hackney has been handed a suspended prison sentence following a dramatic road rage incident at a petrol station that saw him smash through a fence and crash into a bus, before being restrained by courageous members of the public.

Chaotic Morning Unfolds at Hackney Petrol Station

The incident occurred shortly after 7am on October 8 last year at a filling station in Upper Clapton Road, Hackney. Dramatic footage captured by witness Jamie Walker, 24, shows a black Suzuki appearing to confront a white Hackney Council van at the forecourt.

According to Walker, a construction worker from Newcastle who was in London for work, the black car had already entered the petrol station "coming in hot" and damaging news stands before attempting to leave. When a Hackney Council van blocked its exit route, the Suzuki driver rammed directly into the council vehicle.

"The van driver was trying to stop the car from escaping after it had damaged the council's vehicle," Walker explained. "The car was swerving like crazy. The van then started reversing into the car to stop it from fleeing the situation."

Fence Destroyed and Bus Collision

After a passenger from the Suzuki confronted the van driver, the black car accelerated away from the petrol station - but rather than using the proper exit, it ploughed straight through a fence before attempting to join Upper Clapton Road.

The escape attempt was short-lived as the vehicle immediately collided with a single-decker bus, immobilising the Suzuki. Walker described the moment as "pretty intense" and said that once witnesses saw the damage being caused, they felt compelled to intervene.

Public Steps In to Prevent Further Danger

With the vehicle disabled against the bus, multiple witnesses including the van driver rushed to the scene. Recognising the driver as dangerous, they attempted to remove him from the car or retrieve the keys.

"At this point, anyone watching had figured out this driver was dangerous," Walker stated. "So the van driver and other witnesses approached the car to try and remove the driver or the keys."

When access proved difficult, one individual used a hammer to smash the vehicle's windows. The rescuers soon discovered the car had no traditional key as it was a newer model with button start technology.

Police Response and Court Outcome

Metropolitan Police officers arrived minutes later and took control of the situation. Dennis Moldoveanu, 26, of Hackney, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol.

He was subsequently charged with four offences:

  • Driving with excess alcohol in his system
  • Driving without insurance
  • Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence
  • Dangerous driving

At Wood Green Crown Court on February 4, Moldoveanu pleaded guilty to all charges. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the incident despite the significant property damage.

Suspended Sentence with Strict Conditions

The court handed Moldoveanu an 11-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. In addition to the suspended term, he received substantial requirements that must be completed within the 18-month period:

  1. 150 hours of unpaid work
  2. 20 days of rehabilitation activities

The court confirmed that should Moldoveanu fail to fulfil these requirements within the specified timeframe, he will face the full 11-month prison term. This sentencing approach reflects the serious nature of the offences while allowing for rehabilitation under strict supervision.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drink driving and the potential consequences of road rage incidents in urban areas. The swift action by members of the public likely prevented further damage or potential injuries during this alarming morning incident in East London.
