Serious Collision Closes Key Croydon Road

A major road in Croydon has been sealed off for several hours following a serious crash in the early hours of Friday morning. The two-vehicle collision occurred on London Road in Thornton Heath at approximately 3:20am on January 2.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where two men were found with significant injuries. Both were taken to Accident and Emergency by ambulance. Police have confirmed that their injuries are serious but are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Two Drivers Arrested Following Incident

Officers from the Metropolitan Police made two arrests at the scene. A man in his 50s, who was driving one of the cars, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He was taken to a local police station where he remains in custody.

The second arrest involved one of the men taken to hospital. A man in his 30s was arrested for suspected driving offences and remains under medical care while police enquiries continue.

Major Traffic Disruption for South London

The aftermath of the crash has caused significant disruption. London Road is partially closed between Wharfedale Gardens and Headcorn Road, a key route through Norbury and Thornton Heath. The closure was put in place around 3:30am to allow forensic collision investigators to examine the scene.

According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, the busy route has been shut for over seven hours. Transport for London has diverted several bus services away from the area. Authorities have not yet provided an estimated time for the road to reopen.

A Met Police spokesperson issued an appeal for information, stating: “Enquiries are ongoing. If you have any dashcam footage or information that may assist, please contact police on 101, quoting CAD 727/02Jan.”
