Vincent O'Connor, 47, and his wife Clare heard a deafening thud at 11pm as a black Kia, allegedly driven by someone inhaling balloons, crashed into the rear of their end-of-terrace home in North Tottenham.

The O'Connors have been urging Haringey Council for years to address the notorious 'rat run' between Shelbourne Road and Tottenham High Road, a shortcut that residents say has plagued the neighborhood since the 1970s. This crash is not an isolated event; neighbors report a spate of similar incidents in recent years, including a car plowing through a front garden on Rosebery Avenue and a speeding jeep flipping upside down.
"I was just relieved my children weren't in the garden at the time," Vincent O'Connor told local media. "This has been weighing on my mind for a couple of years now. My nine-year-old daughter says she doesn't want to go outside anymore, so I have to figure out how to repair the wall with concrete to potentially stop another vehicle."

Osman Dervis, a resident of nearby Rosebery Avenue, expressed fury at seeing yet another speeding driver crash in the area. He uses the bus stop adjacent to the crash site daily to take his son, who has Down Syndrome, to Tottenham High Road, heightening concerns over pedestrian safety.
Vincent O'Connor added, "We've been lucky so far with these incidents, but that luck could easily run out. I don't want to say 'I told you so'—I want to prevent a tragedy before it happens." The Metropolitan Police did not comment on the incident, though Mr. O'Connor noted it is not being treated as a drug driving case.
Council Response and Proposed Measures
In response to mounting concerns from families about the 'rat run' and gridlock in north Tottenham, ward councillors have met with Haringey Council officers. The council has agreed to consult residents on introducing traffic control measures to enhance safety.
