Camden road closures: Five weeks of disruption for drivers in January 2026
Camden faces five weeks of road closures in January

Motorists across the London Borough of Camden are facing significant travel disruption throughout January 2026, with a series of essential works forcing road closures for periods of up to five weeks.

Major Projects and Long-Term Disruption

The high-speed HS2 railway project continues to impact key routes, with works affecting Finchley Road set to persist well into the new year. Furthermore, utility companies are carrying out extensive gas, power, and water maintenance across the borough, compounding the travel chaos.

One of the most prolonged closures will be on Adamson Road in Belsize Park, which shuts for power works from 7am on Tuesday, January 6 until 6pm on Friday, February 13 – a total of five weeks. Similarly, Lancaster Drive will be closed for water works from January 6 until January 23.

Key Areas and Streets Affected

The disruption is widespread, affecting numerous neighbourhoods and major thoroughfares:

Finchley Road and Hampstead

The vital A41 Finchley Road artery will see a range of utility works. A southbound lane closed since December 11 for water works will remain shut until Friday, January 23. Additional lane closures are scheduled for January 8 and January 24, with delays likely.

Near Hampstead Heath, Spaniards Road closes on Saturday, January 10 for telecoms works. Haverstock Hill will see two phases of water works between January 6-9 and January 12-17.

Camden Town and Euston

In Camden Town, Parkway will be closed for Thames Water works until Sunday, January 25. Bayham Street faces a nearly two-week closure for power works from January 15 to January 28.

Around Euston, Euston Road will have ongoing roadworks until 6pm on Wednesday, January 14, with further TfL maintenance at the junction with Upper Woburn Place on January 7. Gray's Inn Road remains closed until midnight on January 7.

Other Notable Closures

St Alban's Road near Highgate Cemetery will close for broadband works between January 19 and 21. In Primrose Hill, Erskine Road shuts from January 19 to 23 for water works.

Utility works linked to HS2 on College Crescent, Alexandra Road, and Hilgrove Road are not due to finish until Sunday, March 1. An emergency Thames Water closure on the College Crescent bus lane junction lasts until January 23.

Short-Term Works and Traffic Controls

Several shorter closures and traffic light installations will also cause localised delays:

  • Highgate Road and Little Green Street: Traffic controls on Friday, January 9 (5pm-11pm).
  • Greenwood Place: Single lane operation from January 12-23 for electrical works.
  • Leighton Road: Temporary signals from January 20-22.
  • Delancey Street: Partial closures January 6-8, full closure on January 23 for gas works.
  • Camden Road: Full weekend closure from January 17 at 6am to January 18 at 10pm for TfL works.

Drivers are strongly advised to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for journeys across Camden throughout January and beyond, as some works are scheduled to continue for months.
