Audi Driver Receives Driving Ban and Suspended Sentence After Causing Army Vehicle Crash
A motorist has been banned from the road for one year following a serious collision that caused an Army-owned Land Rover Defender to flip over on a dual-carriageway in Northamptonshire. The incident, which occurred on January 10 this year, resulted in two individuals sustaining significant injuries, including a suspected fractured back and a head injury.
Details of the Collision on the A43 Near Hulcote
Crenguta Aruxandei, 44, was driving an Audi Q2 when she switched between the outside and inside lanes while attempting to exit the A43 near Hulcote. Dashcam footage captured the moment the military 4x4, which was traveling with a trailer as part of a convoy, was forced to take evasive action at 8:35 am. The maneuver caused the Land Rover to invert on the carriageway. Another Land Rover following behind managed to stop safely after the incident.
The 36-year-old driver of the crashed military vehicle was transported to University Hospital Coventry with a suspected fractured back. His 31-year-old passenger suffered a significant head injury and was taken to Northampton General Hospital for treatment.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing at Northampton Crown Court
Aruxandei was charged with two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving. She initially elected to take the case to trial at a county court but changed her mind before a jury was sworn in, pleading guilty to the charges.
At Northampton Crown Court, she received a six-month jail sentence suspended for 12 months. Additionally, she was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154. Beyond the one-year driving ban, Aruxandei will be required to pass an extended test to regain her licence, ensuring she meets safety standards before returning to the road.
Police Statement on Road Safety and Driver Responsibility
DC Eleanor Hudson of Northamptonshire Police emphasized the gravity of the incident, stating, ‘Holding a driving licence is a privilege and a responsibility and there is no place on our roads for drivers who put the lives of innocent members of the public at risk.’
She added, ‘This was a completely avoidable collision on one of our major roads, which has left two other road users seriously injured. I am pleased that Crenguta Aruxandei will not be able to get back behind the wheel without passing an extended test to ensure she is safe to do so.’
DC Hudson further highlighted the ongoing efforts of Northamptonshire Police and the Northamptonshire Safer Roads Alliance, noting, ‘Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads remains a priority. We will continue to take robust action to remove unsafe drivers from our roads.’
The case underscores the severe consequences of careless driving, particularly on busy roadways where such actions can lead to life-altering injuries. Authorities continue to advocate for heightened vigilance and adherence to traffic laws to prevent similar incidents in the future.
